In addition to foods and medicines,
we collected a range of material resources in Húy̓at. Among the most important plants collected for materials were wood to keep our smokehouses fires going, to keep us warm, and for building materials; cedar bark for baskets, mats, and in the more distant past, for clothing; yew wood for digging sticks, wedges, and other objects requiring hardwood; and nettle stems for the fibre used to make netting. The bones from the hunted sea and land mammals were important raw material for our tools, and of course, the hides were used for clothing.
"When I fall a tree for firewood I talk to the tree: "You must be pretty tired standing up so long. In the middle of winter, you and I can be nice and warm."
